Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Edinburgh is the vibrant and beautiful capital city of Scotland. History, heritage, dramatic cultural landmarks, and outstanding natural beauty are all here for you to explore. From the cobbled streets of the Old Town to the beautiful Georgian avenues of the New Town, Edinburgh is a city of contrasts blending shopping, historic attractions, gardens, and plenty of restaurants and cafes where you can relax.
See the T-Rex at the National Museum of Scotland, the Concorde at the National Museum of Flight, and Steiff Bears at the world’s only dedicated Museum of Childhood. In Edinburgh city center, head to Charlotte Square in the New Town--Robert Adam's masterpiece of urban architecture--and visit the Georgian House. Three floors of the Georgian House have been beautifully refurbished by the National Trust for Scotland to reflect the lifestyle of 1796. Edinburgh is absolutely jam-packed with historic buildings and homes and you don’t need to look for long to uncover some grand architecture. Not far away is Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of three monarchs including Mary Queen of Scots in 1542. Under the care of Historic Scotland, this extensive home of Scotland's Stewart kings is a regular venue for historic performances and re-enactments. Visit the churches and cathedrals of Edinburgh and you’ll discover beautiful buildings with their Gothic architecture and stunning stained glass windows--some are so fascinating, they’ve even been featured in movies.
Edinburgh is a real foodie’s paradise with quality, character, and imagination defining its culinary scene. Whether you want to treat yourself to fine dining in one of the city’s five Michelin-star restaurants or enjoy coffee and a cake in the region’s many cafes and tearooms, you won’t be disappointed. Don't forget to sample some of the world's largest collection of Scotch Whisky and mouth-watering beers, ales, and ciders, many produced locally.
There is certainly no shortage of boutiques, charming shops, and stores selling designer brands in Edinburgh. The historic Grassmarket is a magnet for unusual shops, encompassing vintage clothes, contemporary jewelry, and rare books.
If you want to get away from it all, The Lothians offer scenic countryside, coastlines, and invigorating outdoor activities from watching wildlife to world-class golf. In addition to everything above, Scotland's people add that extra special ingredient: warm welcomes, good sense of humor, fabulous culture, and a real appetite for adventure. You'll soon understand why Edinburgh is the world’s festival capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
